Why Nursing is a Great Career

When it comes to professions, there are several reasons why nursing is a great career. Not only is nursing a rewarding occupation for the person carrying out the role, the profession is expected to be in high demand for decades to come. It is also worth mentioning that society, in general, holds the nursing profession in high regard.

For example, nursing continuously ranks at the top of the annual Gallop poll for honesty and ethics. Between 1999 and 2015, nurses consecutively held the number one spot for honesty and ethics, except for 2001 when firefighters led the way following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Nurse Licensure Compact States

What makes Florida a great place to be a nurse? It became a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state in 2018. This means ABSN graduates who pass the NCLEX-RN exam and claim primary residency in Florida can practice nursing in any NLC state with one multistate license, thus adding a level of affordability and convenience for qualified nurses wanting to practice across state borders.

The NLC started in 2000 to meet the healthcare delivery system’s growing need for highly qualified nursing care across state boundaries. The map below shows all the states currently part of the NLC.

Nurses qualify for Florida Compact Licensure if they:

  • Claim primary residency in Florida
  • Meet Florida’s licensing requirements
  • Pass the NCLEX-RN exam
  • Pass federal and state fingerprint-based criminal background checks
  • Are eligible for or hold an active, unencumbered license

High Demand

Our country is in the midst of a looming healthcare crisis, one that could yield a nationwide shortage as more than 1 million nurses are projected to retire within the next 10 years. Consequently, nurses are in high demand and more than 135,000 RN positions in the U.S are vacant.

Reasons nurses are in high demand:

  • Changes in healthcare policy.
  • More accessibility to healthcare insurance.
  • A stronger emphasis on preventive healthcare.
  • An increased number of people suffering from chronic conditions, e.g., diabetes.
  • Additional medical services needed for the aging baby-boomer population.

Career Flexibility

A career in nursing can take on many forms. A nurse could take up a specialty or pursue an advanced degree, which in turn could lead to lateral moves to other nursing positions or greater upward mobility to leadership positions. And the flexibility doesn’t end there. Nursing is a global industry because health care is needed everywhere. As a result, nurses can live in a host of places.
