Clinical Skills and Nursing Simulation Labs in Syracuse

As part of our hands-on curriculum, you will complete 225 hours of lab time at our UticaABSN site in Liverpool, New York. Under the guidance of faculty, you will learn and apply clinical skills in a controlled, risk-free environment.

During the nursing simulation labs, you will “treat” medical manikins in a variety of scenarios using real hospital equipment in a mock clinical setting. Scenario examples might include treating an elderly patient with a diabetic leg ulcer or working with a young adult with an acute kidney injury.

These labs consist of three main components:

  1. Instructors help students prepare for the clinical scenario.
  2. Students engage in the simulated clinical experience.
  3. Faculty debriefs students on their simulation performances.

Your nursing simulation labs are an opportunity for you to practice advanced skills without putting a patient at risk. Therefore, we urge you to ask as many questions as necessary to ensure you understand how to put nursing theory into professional practice.

Reality Check

We want you to feel confident and prepared when it comes time to start your clinical rotations, which is why our nursing simulation labs get you as close as possible to real-world patient care experiences.

Our medical manikins allow you to:

  • Practice basic nursing skills such as treating wounds.
  • Apply critical skills in high-risk trauma scenarios.
  • Learn from and correct mistakes with the help of faculty.
  • Practice working with others in interactive patient care strategies.

Technology as Teacher

In the today’s world of advanced healthcare and modern medicine, it’s difficult to imagine there was an era—the late 1800s to be exact—when becoming a nurse was less about your qualifications and more about your willingness to do the job.

While once considered unsystematic, nursing education has come a long way, with today’s nursing students having access to highly realistic medical settings where they can learn vital clinical skills without putting patient safety at risk.

When choosing a nursing program, it’s important to pick one that offers quality nursing simulation lab experiences. Research shows that simulation labs are highly effective in building critical thinking and decision making skills—all of which are essential to safe, competent patient care.
